The end of 23 Things and the Beginning of Learning

This has been quite an experience for me. I truly enjoyed this experience and at first, I was convinced that I wouldn't. I especially liked the way Jennifer sent the assigments each week. I know that we could just go to the site and get the information, but she kept me on track until the last week. I was disappointed because I found out that there would be no MP3 Player(smile) as my reward. But life goes on. The last assignment stumped me and I have been trying to do it for (2) weeks now. I wanted to make my own podcast and tried the OPEO site. I think that's how it is spelled. But, I couldn't conquer that one, but I intend on trying again. I really did get into the whole 23 Things thing. I plan to go back to my blog and add on and revisit the sites that I have registered for. Thank you, Jennifer for all your help.

The only link that worked for me was Yahoo Podcasts. I really didn't get into this one because it is the end and I am a little tired and overwhelmed. I have enjoyed doing this, but continuing it without someone telling you to is going to be different. I have looked at some podcast, added one to my blog and blogged about it. Bookworm is also another one that I looked at. They showcase writers of fiction and poetry. I chose the NY Times book review podcast.

I chose this site because it is the one that I am familiar with. One of the pages at work showed me the site weeks ago and I liked it because I am always trying to find music and on this site you can listen to the music and not just a little bit, but the whole song.
I chose the video because Yolanda Adams and Donnie McClurkin are two of my favorite artist and the song is very inspirational and I felt that anyone that visited my blog would enjoy it.
In fact, a patron was looking for a particular song and artist. He had the song on his digital recorder, but didn't know the title or the artist. We were able to locate the song and the artist.

So here is my first initial supportive post to your blog. This week has been really busy with school and I taught my first Parenting Class for the Bethesda Clinic. It was a success and the parents were really appreciative. The kids are doing good. The oldest had three perfect days at school this week and is really happy. I promised a quarter for each good day. I chose Wufoo from the 2.0 awards list. It allows you to make forms. It is free for the first (3) forms and then you are charged. As you can see, I created a "potential problem log" from our training on 3/11/08 and I was able to copy it to my blog. I did like the site, but I don't think it will be used by the library.

WEB 2.0 Awards

I explored the Web 2.0 Awards site. There were some web sites that I could see the library staff using. The www.biblio.com site which allows you to find out of print books and you can also buy them from this site. This could be useful if a patron wanted to secure a book that is no longer in print. Also, librarything.com, which people who read can offer suggestions to others about what they read and how great or not so great it was. If patrons ask you for suggestions on what to read, you could suggest this site or check it out for them.
There is so much to look at on 2.0 and read and you have so many choices that it becomes tiresome looking at it. Over all, it is ok. There is a broad selection of sites and it all comes with an explanation.

Black Belt Librarians

Today, 3/11/08, I attended a presentation at ESRL concerning library safety. The presenter was Warren Graham. For the past weeks, the employees at my location have been talking about our issues with safety at our facility.
This presentation was excellent. It addressed all of our concerns.

As employees of the library, we have a right to have a safe and secure work environment and we have a right to be treated civilly by the public that we serve.

My problem is that there is no plan or procedure that I have seen since my employment that establishes guidelines for enforcement of rules. Also, I feel that when we try to create some rules that insure some order on our shift, we aren't backed up by administration. As a matter of fact, some managers actually sabotage the process and you lose the advantage that you had established.

My hope is that everyone from the top down gets this information and does something with it. Everyone that works in the library and patrons that use the library may one day have their life depend on it.

Week 7 and the WIKI WIKI Experience

Well, it is done. I have completed all requirements so that I can move to week 8. Halleujia!!!!!! I created a wiki for myself and I am hoping that folks will contribute to it. I am caring for an aged parent and it hasn't been easy, so I created a page on my WIKI entitled, "Becoming Mom and Pop". Please leave comments and suggestions if you are a caregiver. I have added a tag to my account. The instructions for this week's exercises are sooo long and my patience ran out. Tagging and all the other stuff made me have a headache. I listened to the tutorial and tried to follow the directions. I don't feel that I got everything that I was supposed to out of this exercise. It's hard to try to do this at work. Most exercises must be done from your home computer, especially, this del.icio.us system because of your browser, I think. Anyway, I feel like a failure for this one, but I tried.

At 10:41am, I finally was able to attach Rollyo to my blogger. I am so happy at this moment. I pray that I will remember this stuff. Other employees that have gone thru this are very supportive here at the library, especially my new friends and co-employees, Rose and Christina. It is such a pleasure to work with them. We have become a team. Well, I can't say that I am looking forward to Week (6), but I am ready for the next phase of lifelong learning. Wish me God's Blessings!!!!!

I like this site and will probably use it after completion of the 23 Things adventure. I think this is going to be a life changing experience for me. Even though I don't get comments posted from other bloggers on my blog(smile), I have gotten excited now about my experience each week. In spite of me, I am doing the exercises. I want to be successful in this adventure. It has become very important to me. At first, I thought, I will do this because someone told me I had to and it will be over and I will never use it again, but I am slowly getting to like it and I want to continue using it and learning more. I think this will keep my mind occupied and alert.

WEEK 5 OF 23 THINGS

I previewed the image generators that were listed. I had no idea what I was supposed to do. Week (5) was supposed to be fun, but I wasn't having any fun starting out on the exercises. I finally found a generator that appealed to me. Guees what! I was successful in adding it to my blog. I was able to customize it and add my own words and get it on other to the blog. It took me (2) tries, but finally, SUCCESS!!! I am so excited about this. I hope someone out there understands what I am feeling. I have been able to get to week (5) and complete each assignment. At (58), this is monumental for me. Usually, I have no confidence with new things done thru the computer. I have mastered the internet and I can pay my bills and view my accounts. I can send and receive emails, but outside of these things, I am lost. Blogging, flickring, etc. are not my comfort zones, but I have managed to do them. HOORAY FOR ME!!!!!!!

I subscribed to Merlin, but I had to use my library email address to verify who I was. I have reviewed it , but I don't know if I will have time to use it after the 23 things are completed. So far, the problem I realize with all of this is time to play around in everything, so that you don't lose what you have learned. Most of the folks that I have talked to that already did the "23 Things" didn't really use it after they completed the training. But, I am determined to finish.

I enjoyed this one somewhat. I am still a little uncomfortable, but I feel as if I am accomplishing something on a weekly basis and that feels wonderful. I asked my computer savvy kids about blogs, flickr and rss. Noone was aware of them. They had heard some things, but never used. That made me feel good!!!! Well, I have completed some of Week (3) exercises. 1. Set up Flickr acct. 2.Posted a comment on someone elses blog.
It is 8:50pm and my head is hurting. I can't post a picture and connect Flickr and my blog. I have looked at examples and I still am lost. What if I have no pictures of my own as yet. Can I just get a nice scene from my computer and post that to my blog? If someone out there hears me, please answer. In the meantime, I will be in front of my laptop crying.

I am once again lost, but I did manage to register in yahoo for Flickr. Now, I have Google, Yahoo and Hotmail. I was perfectly satisfied with Hotmail and one password. But, I am going to continue until all 23 things are completed. Now, I need to remember where I put that sheet that tells me what I have completed.

The older I get, the more I envy the young kids, somewhat. Their minds are like sponges and they soak up so much. My grands are so smart. I doubt if at their age, I knew as much as they do. Their vocabulary always astonishes me. They are 6, 2 and 2 and they already speak well and can carry on an intelligent conversation. My mind is tired(smile). This "23 " Things, thing is a real challenge for me. I am praying I can complete it. I think I will let myself down if I don't.
